in honour of zaida hershel's yortzheit on thursday, iy"h, i think it would be nice if everyone could comment a story or a memory of zaida for everyone to read.
My best memory of zeide is his warm smile.Whenever I walked into the house I knew I would be greeted by his warm smile, and he was always interested in everything I was doing
I remember thinking that it was so wierd when Mummy said that Zaida was strict when they were growing up. He did not seem that way to me at all. He used to whisper behind his hand about Bobe's ramblings 'SHUT UP' to us! We could stand on his woven leather shoes and hold on to his hands so that he would walk us around the room. And he would put his hat on side ways on Friday nights after the meal and stumble 'drunkenly' around the room singing kallh pom.
Zeide was a symbol of a teacher to me. He didn't put me on his lap and give me money or kisses, like other Zeide's, but he talked to me, took interest in my development, and made it his concern to 'intimidate' me for not doing the best I could. It was a really interesting experience visiting their home. There were like two different stations. Usually, I would first arrive in the study, sit and talk, discuss, learn etc. The next stop was in the kitchen, chat, nibble and laugh together with Bobe. It was a great contrast and balance. For me, that study signifies an emptiness and a void. Its missing it most important piece of furniture. But not for long....
